AI Referral Analytics

Finally know which
AI tools send you
real traffic

ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude are citing your content and sending visitors, but your analytics shows nothing. AuthorityStack.ai tracks AI-sourced traffic with precise source attribution, journey tracking, and zero personal data collection.

Your analytics are blind to the fastest-growing traffic channel

AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode strip referrer headers when they cite your content. Your Google Analytics sees "Direct" traffic. You see nothing.

Meanwhile, AI-sourced visitors convert at 2–3× the rate of organic search and read 60% more of your content. You're flying blind on your best channel.

01
ChatGPT strips referrers on new-tab opens. Most AI traffic appears as Direct. You can't optimize what you can't see.
02
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode pass no referrer at all. Even with GA4, you can't separate these clicks from standard organic without UTM tags.
03
GA4 wasn't built for AI search. Its channel definitions predate the AI era. There's no native "AI" channel group.

Everything you need to understand AI-driven traffic

From the raw citation event to multi-touch attribution across the full user journey. Built on a privacy-first tracker that honors GPC, DNT, and never sets a cookie.

AI source detection

Tracks 20+ AI platforms by referrer and UTM. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, Grok, and more, including Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode via UTM tagging.

Source verification

Every attribution is cross-checked. UTM + referrer corroboration = verified. Referrer only = partial match. Unverified UTM claim = flagged. You always know exactly how each session was attributed.

Journey attribution

Did AI introduce this user or assist them mid-journey? The introduced / assisted / unclassified framework tells you where AI sits in every session, from first touch to conversion.

Batched and lightweight

Events queue and flush every 8 seconds or on page hide. Failed sends retry automatically. Bot filtered before any tracking runs. Under 1KB on the wire per flush.

Built for a world where trust matters

We built this because we needed it ourselves — and we refused to build it the surveillance way. No cookies. No fingerprinting. No personal data. Just the signal you actually need to understand what's working.

Honors Global Privacy Control (GPC) — legally required in California
Honors DNT (Do Not Track) — nothing sent when either signal is set
No cookies — uses sessionStorage by default, resets per tab
Screen size bucketed to mobile/tablet/desktop — not fingerprint-grade
Language root only ("en" not "en-GB") — removes regional specificity
Bot and headless browser filtered before any tracking runs
Click tracking opt-in only via data-track attribute

From install to insight in under five minutes

01

Paste one script tag

Add the tracker to your site's <head>. Works on any site — WordPress, Webflow, Next.js, plain HTML.

02

Tag your cited URLs

Add UTM parameters to links you want AI to cite: utm_medium=ai_overview. That's the reliable signal.

03

See who AI actually sends

Within hours you know which platforms cite you, how confident each attribution is, and whether those visitors are converting — broken down by content type and journey stage.

04

Read your dashboard

Seven sections covering traffic, attribution, sources, content, engagement, conversions, and recent sessions. All filter-consistent and drill-down ready.

What early users are saying

I finally know that 28% of my converting traffic comes from Perplexity citations. That changed everything about how I write content. Nothing else told me that.

Source-level attribution changed how I allocate content effort. I can now see that Perplexity sends 3× more converting visitors than ChatGPT — which was the opposite of my instinct. That one insight paid for the tool.

We cleared legal in two days. GPC honored, no cookies, no PII — they had nothing to object to. Every other tool we evaluated was a 3-month compliance conversation that went nowhere.

Common questions

Does this work if I already have GA4?
Yes, and it complements GA4 rather than replacing it. GA4 has no native AI channel group and can't distinguish AI Overview clicks from regular organic. AuthorityStack.ai sits alongside GA4 and fills exactly that gap.
How does it detect Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?
Both Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode strip referrer headers entirely, so detection requires UTM parameters on your cited URLs. Tag links cited in AI Overviews with utm_medium=ai_overview, and links cited in AI Mode with utm_medium=ai_mode. The tracker will correctly attribute both using UTM cross-verification.
Is it really GDPR and CCPA compliant?
The tracker collects no personal data at the script level. It honors Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track signals — both legally recognized in California under CPRA. No cookies are set by default. Screen size is bucketed (mobile/tablet/desktop), language is root-only. Nothing is precise enough to identify an individual.
How accurate is the AI source attribution?
Attribution uses a multi-signal approach: referrer header matching combined with UTM parameter verification. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude all send referrer headers. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode strip referrers, so UTM tagging covers those. Sessions are only attributed when the signals corroborate each other.
Does it work on single-page apps?
pushState and replaceState are both patched to handle client-side navigation. Attribution state, content meta tags, and engagement timers all reset correctly on each route change — no stale data from previous pages.
How do I track conversions?
Add data-track="conversion" to any button or link — signup forms, purchase buttons, demo requests. You can also add data-track-label="signup" to distinguish conversion types in your dashboard.
What's included in the dashboard?
Seven sections covering traffic, attribution, sources, content, engagement, conversions, and recent sessions. All filter-consistent and drill-down ready. You can also set a date range, filter by AI source, and export data.
